Randy Couture’s victory bolsters UFC heavyweights

Randy Couture never has been one to back down from a challenge.

It was last November when he decided to end a yearlong retirement to return to the octagon. Not only did he come back, he defeated Tim Sylvia in March to become the UFC heavyweight champion.

This past Saturday at UFC 74, Couture once again defied the odds when he scored a dominating victory against Gabriel Gonzaga, an opponent 16 years younger and 22 pounds heavier.

Now the 44-year-old champion has his sights set on the next big challenge, one that might be the biggest of his career.

How to handle Lesnar’s UFC introduction

With the signing of Brock Lesnar imminent, UFC President Dana White faces an interesting dilemma.

Should he fast-track an inexperienced — albeit well-known — heavyweight competitor from his days in World Wrestling Entertainment toward a marquee UFC debut? Or does he make Lesnar — who has just one mixed martial arts bout under his belt — earn his stripes, knowing that an early UFC loss could severely damage his potential drawing power like it did Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic when the former PRIDE champion was upset by Gabriel Gonzaga in April?

On the road to redemption

Canadian scrapper Georges St. Pierre’s next fight will be a shot at redemption and the welterweight belt.During the post-fight press conference, Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White said St.Pierre will fight the winner of the Matt Serra/Matt Hughes championship fight set for December.

“Of course, I would like to fight Matt Serra because he beat me last time and I’d love to have a rematch,” said St. Pierre who lost his belt to ten-to-one underdog Serra earlier this year.

“I hope Matt Serra wins because I know I’m better than what I showed last time and I want to prove it to everybody.”

Mac Danzig Talks The Ultimate Fighter 6

According to his blog, Mac Danzig claims he chose to do TUF 6 because PRIDE was done-sir-done.  Notable quote:

In May, I got sent to Las Vegas (almost out of the blue) to do an interview with Spike tv producers in a sort of casting call for the show… I wasn’t into the idea at first, but when my manager informed me that Pride was not going to have an event any time in the foreseeable future, I realized that being on the show would be the best move for my MMA career at this point in time.
