Another group endures six weeks hard labour in “The Ultimate Fighter”

Mac Danzig had friends who had been on previous seasons of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show, so the mixed martial arts fighter knew what to expect. But that knowledge didn’t make the experience any easier.

“I knew what I was getting into, but it didn’t necessarily make it any less stressful,” Danzig said in an interview. “When times got tough, it was still tough.”

In Season 6 of the show, which debuts Wednesday (Spike TV, 11 p.m. ET), the focus is on the welterweights with 170-pound UFC champion Matt Serra and former title-holder Matt Hughes as rival coaches.

MMA packs big ratings punch

Watch out, sports fans. There is a new game in town, and it packs quite a punch, both literally and in the ratings game.

Football has had to punt. Baseball struck out. Hockey got stuck in the penalty box. Basketball only has fans this aggressive.

Recently, the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has “ground ed and pounded” its way onto the main stage of the world of sports with a vicious vengeance.

Combining different disciplines such as boxing, wrestling, karate and jiu-jitsu, MMA is a fast and furious sport that is pulling both fans and participants away from more traditional ones.

Can EliteXC put the pieces together?

Don’t look now, but here comes Elite Xtreme Combat.

While MMA organizations come and go — literally hundreds of promotions have popped up in every nook and cranny of the world — EliteXC is gathering the pieces it needs to stand out from a crowded field of competitors.

When EliteXC first announced its presence in December 2006, a broadcasting deal with Showtime gave it instant credibility. However, that strategic partnership has only been the start.

From a talent standpoint, EliteXC still pales in comparison to the top dog, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Fitch gets his shot at UFC’s main stage

This is foreign territory for Jon Fitch.

After five years of toiling through the minor league ranks of mixed martial arts and being relegated to “dark” matches of Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view shows, Fitch is on a main card.

The 29-year-old former Purdue University wrestler will face Diego Sanchez in a featured welterweight bout with title implications at UFC 76, on Saturday in Anaheim, Calif.

“It’s a little weird seeing the posters and the commercials on TV,” said Fitch, who is part of pre-fight hype for the first time. “I get excited to fight in front of big crowds. I’m used to performing in front of nobody, having 15 people in the stands, maybe my parents, some relatives. But, to me, the energy of a big crowd helps.”

MMA fighters battle in Valdosta

The Winnersville Wars took place Saturday night with 12 fights that gave the Mathis Auditorium crowd their money’s worth.

The main event of the evening was a pro lightweight fight in which Kamrin Naville, out of Valdosta, was defeated by Josh Odom, out of Tallahassee.

Odom won 1:09 into round 1 with an arm-bar submission move. Naville had just taken down Odom after the two exchanged punches, but with one move, Naville lost position and his arm to Odom (5-4).

In the other main event, Shaun Gay faced off with Gary Owens in a pro welterweight fight. Gay came out the winner 57 seconds into round 1 with a guillotine choke hold.
