Anan Lui: Mum tormented by a man who thought he was god

“He told people he was the best in the world at Wu-style tai chi - he said he was a grand master. He was always boasting and lying - all so he could make money by cheating people.”

IT was always going to be impossible for Annie Lui to live up to her husband’s expectations - the man who once co-wrote a book claiming his birth was a gift from the gods was nothing more than a domineering, … via News.com.au

Minico grad competes in UFC reality show

For 1999 Minico High School graduate Daniel Barrera, auditioning for “The Ultimate Fighter” show was not only a leap of faith but a test of his faith as well.

Beginning tonight, Barrera will be one of 16 fighters featured in Ultimate Fighting Championship’s reality show, “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra,” broadcast by the cable channel Spike TV.

Barrera’s background was a perfect mix to join the world of mixed martial arts. He is a former wrestler for the Minico Spartans, where he trained under coach Brad Cooper. He wrestled in the 160-pound class as a junior and moved up to 171 as a senior, making the state tournament. Cooper said he remembered Barrera losing only a single match in the state tournament to finish third.

Matt Serra interview, TUF 6, and UFC Fight Night 11

As many of you may be aware, The Ultimate Fighter season six begins tonight on Spike TV. The season will feature 16 welterweights who will be coached by either current UFC welterweight champ Matt Serra or former welterweight champ Matt Hughes. The two have something of a feud going, so I imagine that along with fighter histrionics, the rapport between the two Matts will be quite entertaining as well.

Spike TV has moved TUF 6 to Wednesday (a departure from the show’s customary Thursday evening time slot.) Tonight’s first episode airs at 11 p.m., after UFC Fight Night 11.

Around the octagon: UFC 76 storylines

Have you had your fill of the Ultimate Fighting Championship yet? Well, the company isn’t about to let their fans take a break. The UFC presents their fourth card in the past four weeks with UFC 76: Knockout, live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This show looks to be one of those sleeper shows, where you look at the card and aren’t impressed at first glance, but then look deeper and see the potential for an intriguing show.

Here are eight items worth following come Saturday night:

Arroyo Aiming To Be ‘Ultimate Fighter’

Matt Arroyo eats black belts for breakfast. No, really, he eats black belts for breakfast.

At least that’s what he said and acted out on the tape he sent to producers from Spike TV and “The Ultimate Fighter” series in April. The tape is now posted on his MySpace page.

In reality, Arroyo is attempting to eat up the competition when Season 6 of “The Ultimate Fighter” premieres tonight at 9 on Spike TV.

Arroyo, a native of Cobleskill, N.Y., who graduated from the University of Tampa and is a Tampa resident, was one of 16 competitors selected for the show, filmed June 7 through July 17 in Las Vegas.

In Defense of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’

In the hierarchy of cool, being a reality television contestant falls just short of having leprosy.

Plucked from obscurity, amateur subjects are a blessing for networks eager to produce cheap, efficient programming. Why pay writers and performers huge salaries when you can point a camera at some schmuck from Minnesota or a Hooters waitress from Los Angeles, watch them devolve into a trick monkey, and collect the same ad revenue?

Viewers tune in but with a resentment that doesn’t exist for scripted entertainment. Reality stars are not unlike adult performers: they’re used but with a degree of contempt.

Area UFC fighter Thomas on national TV tonight

Area Mixed Martial Arts fans will get a chance to watch local fighter Din Thomas compete tonight.Thomas (23-7) will take on Kenny Florian (9-3) in the main event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Fight Night in Las Vegas. The fight will be aired live on Spike TV at 9 p.m., and the winner could be in line for a title shot in the lightweight division

But the atmosphere will not be intimidating for the Port St. Lucie High School graduate.
