McAfee suffers loss in martial arts event

North Pole’s Scott McAfee suffered the first defeat of his professional mixed martial arts career, losing by submission to Marcus Hicks of Dallas during a nationally-televised World Extreme Cagefighting card in Las Vegas on Wednesday night.

Hicks, 5-foot-6 and 155 pounds, got McAfee (5-8, 155) to submit to a guillotine choke at 2 minutes, 13 seconds in the first round of the lightweight bout. The guillotine involves applying pressure in front and above an opponent while holding his neck in the crook of your elbow.

The 24-year-old McAfee, who trains in Tempe, Ariz., was 6-0-0 heading into his bout, one of 10 on the card at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino that was carried on the Versus cable network (GCI Channel 39).

It was the seventh win for the unbeaten and 31-year-old Hicks.
