UFC eyes Dallas for Texas return
Dallas has dibs on the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2008.
Despite the success of UFC 69, a return to Houston next year is not in UFC’s plans.
The April show, the UFC’s first in Texas, drew more than 15,000 at Toyota Center. The event produced a gate of $2.8 million — the largest in venue history. However, it appears Houston will wait another year before hosting the top brand in mixed martial arts for an encore.
UFC vice president of regular affairs Marc Ratner said the promotion intends to produce a show in Dallas in 2008. The organization expects that show to be its only event in Texas next year.
Regional mixed martial arts organizations have had success in Dallas. The Art of War promotion staged a show at American Airlines Center on Saturday and drew nearly 8,000 fans. The attendance level bodes well for the UFC, which is continuing to test markets across the country.
Ratner said it is too early in the scheduling process to determine when the Dallas show will be held.
